Susie and Harold are one of those dream couples who make a wedding photographer’s job a pleasure: They’re easygoing, respectful, and polite. We first met back in October at a cafe in my Brooklyn neighborhood and spent some time getting to know each other. The vibe I got from them was simply, “We like your work. You’re the artist. Just tell us where to be and what you want us to do.” Eight months later, I was at the Brooklyn Winery photographing their 140-person wedding.
And it was really that easy. I arrived early to document the space and decorations. The Brooklyn Winery, I later realized, used to be the popular bar and club called “Supreme Trading” I once frequented in my more youthful years (circa 2006). The staff was nice enough to let us take photos in their Portrait Room, artfully decorated with classic sepia prints. The ceremony was held in the Harvest Room which opened up into the beautiful Courtyard for cocktail hour. It was my first time shooting at the Winery, and it’s a well thought out space that allowed for some nice backdrops.

Future father-in-laws share a moment before the ceremony.

A Newlywed Stroll on the Waterfront
Earlier, I’d suggested a photowalk during mid-evening’s “Golden Hour,” and Harold had replied, “Sounds nice to kind of get away…” I’d parked my car right next to the Winery, so we hopped in and snuck away to the Williamsburg Waterfront area. “I sort of feel like I’m kidnapping you guys,” I joked. “It feels so nice to sit down,” Susie said. Along the East river, we passed a poster of a “Extreme”-looking man holding a bicycle over his shoulder advertising the new “Edge” condos. Susie and Harold posed for a photo, flashing gang signs. 20 minutes later we were back and found the guests just finishing dinner. The venue’s projection screen was showing childhood photographs of Susie and Harold and there were frequent bursts of laughter.

Dancing the Night Away

Recently, I’ve been getting more and more queries for weddings in Brooklyn — which is really a treat for me. Not only do I get to be home in time for the Daily Show, but I’ve also lived in these parts for the past 8 years. In doing so, I’ve become very familiar with the bars, restaurants, and overall vibe of the neighborhood. Not to mention, Brooklyn attracts a particular clientele that meshes well with my style of photography. (Harold and Susie being the perfect example!)
Towards the end of the night I asked Harold, “Do you guys need me to cover anything else before I take off?”
“One second,” he said, and went to consult with his new wife.
“Yes, just one more thing,” he said. “Could we just get one last photo with you in it?”
I gladly agreed.
Congratulations, Harold and Susie!
