One of the things I love about the weddings I’ve been fortunate enough to photograph is they allow me to travel to new and interesting places. Recently, I photographed Julia and Sam’s wedding at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Now, Cornell wasn’t completely new to me. I had made a pit stop there on my way back from a cabin trip in Cayuga last year for a whopping half an hour. I walked a portion of the university and saw classic ivy league architecture interspersed with lush green forests and incredible gorges. I walked with my jaw gaping open and could picture my life there a la Alternate Ithaca Tom. I knew I would have to come back. Lo and behold, here I was photographing a wedding at the beautiful Sage Chapel on the most perfect summer day imaginable.

The wedding rings were passed around so each guest had a chance to take a close look.

WEDDING PORTRAITS
Before the wedding ceremony, I went on a photowalk around the university with the soon-to-be wedded couple. We had a nice time exploring Julia and Sam’s alma mater and visited some of their favorite stomping grounds. It’s something I love to do to break the ice and get the couple to feel comfortable around a camera.
After the ceremony, Sam breathed out a tremendous sigh of relief and then said to me, “I didn’t even know you were there.” I get this comment a lot and consider it a great compliment.

WEDDING RECEPTION
From Sage Chapel, we moved to Sam’s childhood home near Cortland where the reception was held. There, we were greeted with a quaint pond with a beach, gazebo and paddle boats. A huge white tent was set up where the guests would later enjoy a buffet of grilled chicken and local fresh veggies as well as every kind of dessert you can imagine. Everyone grabbed a beer or a glass of punch and spent the rest of the afternoon playing horseshoes and badminton or just lounging by the pond while Sam and Julia danced under the big white tent.

I experimented with some cross processing style of post-production because I felt it fit with the theme of a relaxing afternoon under a tent and storybook pond.

Congratulations to the happy couple! And thank you for choosing such a lovely location and having me there to document your special day.
