I’m about to embark on a big trip to Southeast Asia in a couple of weeks but before I took off, I wanted to recap a special wedding I photographed back in November. It was my final wedding of last year, a Sunday affair, and began at Anna and Jourdan’s apartment in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The ceremony was held on their fabulous rooftop overlooking both the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, the BQE, and the entire New York City skyline. The weather couldn’t have been any more pleasant for a November morning. After the ceremony, Anna and Jourdan, along with all 80-some guests walked through the streets of Dumbo, waving at passing pedestrians. We arrived at the East River Ferry dock for a huge group portrait. Anna and Jourdan had purchased tickets for everyone beforehand so we took over the boat and arrived in style to Greenpoint where the reception was to take place.

After a lovely cocktail hour and a delicious dinner at Juliette Restaurant, the wedding party swarmed the hipsterdom streets of Williamsburg to Larry Lawrence bar a few blocks away. There, we walked up to a traditional Indian mandap (covered structure with pillars) being raised. Brandy had mentioned they cost something like $2K just to RENT so she and her dad went ahead and built it themselves. We launched into a traditional Indian ceremony which captivated the audience from all over the world. Someone at the audience asked me if I shoot Indian weddings all the time. But despite being from Bangladesh, this was my FIRST actual Indian ceremony. (Or at least one I can remember before migrating to this country at age 9).

Meanwhile, in the corner of Larry Lawrence, strobe lights were going off. My photobooth company, Oh Snap! Smile, had set up a photobooth which quickly went into effect after the ceremony ended, and would continue to operate until the lights were shut at 4 in the morning. Never a dull moment as the drinks flowed and the shutter clicked.

Toasts, cocktails, dancing and even late night tacos made an appearance throughout the course of the night. It was truly an epic wedding and my most heartfelt congrats to the happy couple, Brandy and Sudhir!

Brandy and Sudhir’s wedding in Brooklyn was so epic I couldn’t capture it in one blog post. I met Brandy at her apartment near McCarren Park in Williamsburg to take some shots of her getting ready with her girlfriends and family. The night before there was a raging rehearsal dinner / mendhi party complete with a band and bhangra dance lessons. The next day, the henna was looking especially vibrant on all the women, and even on some brave men too!

Then we joined Sudhir and his party at the nearby Juliette Restaurant for cocktail hour on the roof. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and the champagne was flowing plentiful. It was my first time shooting a wedding at the popular French bistro at the heart of Bedford Avenue and I was impressed with the space. But the main highlight was the food. Brandy had mentioned that she and Sudhir had pretty much sampled the entire menu from several visits to the restaurant. Fair to say, they nailed it! I normally don’t get to enjoy dinner before all the heavy lifting, but I wasn’t going to complain. Among the highlights was a citrusy octopus salad and some of the best gnocchi in Brooklyn.

Make sure to check out part 2 of Brandy and Sudhir’s wedding at Larry Lawrence bar in Williamsburg for coverage of a traditional Indian ceremony and the reception.

Nothing entices me to follow up on a wedding query more than the opportunity to travel. Recently, I’ve received queries to photograph weddings in Hawaii, the Caribbean and even the far away land of Staten Island.

So, I was excited when a few weeks ago I had the opportunity to shoot Amy and Patrick’s wedding in Mystic, Connecticut. Amy and I connected right away when we talked about my trip to South Africa a couple of years ago and how she was planning her honeymoon there. Last year, I had photographed her sister, Heather’s wedding at the Montauk Club in Brooklyn. I immediately noticed familiar faces including, of course, Amy and Heather’s wonderful parents and family. “You must be the official Plourde girls’ wedding photographer,” one of the guests commented.

Amy and Patrick recently bought a beautiful (and huge!) house in Mystic and have left New York City for a more aquatic setting. On wedding day, I met them at the big house as the girls were getting ready and then followed them onto an awesome boat one of the family members had offered. It was a lovely afternoon with twin swans floating by and the famous Mystic drawbridge parting to allow us entrance into the Mystic Seaport where the wedding was to be held. We rolled up in true style with hundreds of guests cheering and waving.
