Susie and Harold are one of those dream couples who make a wedding photographer’s job a pleasure: They’re easygoing, respectful, and polite. We first met back in October at a cafe in my Brooklyn neighborhood and spent some time getting to know each other. The vibe I got from them was simply, “We like your work. You’re the artist. Just tell us where to be and what you want us to do.” Eight months later, I was at the Brooklyn Winery photographing their 140-person wedding.

And it was really that easy. I arrived early to document the space and decorations. The Brooklyn Winery, I later realized, used to be the popular bar and club called “Supreme Trading” I once frequented in my more youthful years (circa 2006). The staff was nice enough to let us take photos in their Portrait Room, artfully decorated with classic sepia prints. The ceremony was held in the Harvest Room which opened up into the beautiful Courtyard for cocktail hour. It was my first time shooting at the Winery, and it’s a well thought out space that allowed for some nice backdrops.

Last weekend, a couple of my good friends — Colin and Amanda — got hitched at the jaw-droppingly beautiful Onteora Mountain House in Boiceville, New York. Surrounded by the Catskill mountains in all directions, it was the perfect “Mansion on the Hill” atmospheric wedding. It was an especially important event because Colin and Amanda are some of my first good friends to tie the knot and we got to celebrate with a lot of our mutual friends. They were also kind enough to give me the night off.* But, hey, it’s not like I was going to leave my camera at home.

You’ll remember Elton and Min-Ja as the lovely couple I had taken engagement photos for in Dumbo, Brooklyn a couple of months ago. I recently had a chance to photograph their beautiful wedding at Midtown Loft and Terrace in New York City. Here are some highlights from a photobooth Kelly and I operated at the event.

Props and decor by Kelly L. Phillips. View the full set on Facebook.

I’ve always wanted to do a photo shoot in Dumbo. I love the cobblestones, the exposed brick and graffiti, and of course the awe-inspiring Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. It all goes to make Dumbo a classic Brooklyn neighborhood. So when Elton and Min-Ja approached me for an engagement shoot, I couldn’t help but make the suggestion. We waited out the long, cold (did I mention it’s been LONG?) New York City winter until the perfect spring day came along.

As the temperature cools, another wedding season comes to an end. This was my first full year photographing weddings and without a doubt a very productive, educational and inspiring experience. Anne and Jim’s wedding was the perfect way cap off the season. I flew to Minneapolis and then drove five hours north to the small town of Ely, Minnesota. Ely serves as the gateway to hundreds of miles of wild canoeing near the Canadian border. It’s also the heart of Northern Minnesota’s cabin country. Appropriately enough, the wedding took place in Jim’s family cabin which appeared as if straight from the pages of Dwell magazine.

I had a very fond connection to the bride even though the wedding would be the first time we would meet. I’ve been very good friends with Anne’s sister Sarah for most of my New York City life. Sarah had been living in Copenhagen when she approached me with the idea of photographing her sister’s wedding. In several emails, Anne kept insisting “you would be our guest” in addition to photographer. Meeting her and Jim was as special as the wedding they so lovingly put together. I took photos to keep with the pace of the event, which was calm and peaceful. I took the time to get to know my surroundings and relax with Anne, Jim and their family and friends. We had a great rehearsal dinner the night before where I scouted out the cabin and the nearby woods for unique backgrounds and settings.

And then I started clicking the shutter… oh about a couple thousand times throughout the weekend. The highlight was after the ceremony when Anne and Jim jumped into their canoe and did a victory lap on Burntside Lake. Then, they came back to grab me, laughing and rowing while I sat in the middle snapping photographs.
