During our weekend of Swinefest extravaganza, we decided to spend Saturday night in Pine Plains, New York, rather than drive home at 4 in the morning having consumed large quantities of pork and beer. Luckily, the good folks at The Farm were thinking along the same lines, and offered us a spot on their giant green field.

So there were were, pitching a tent at the edge of a cornfield with the soft green mountains of the Catskills all around us. I loved this! (Sorry, I didn’t get enough of this sleeping-on-the-ground business having spent most of my life in Hollywood and Brooklyn). After the tent was up, I was starting to feel a bit light-headed from the many trips I had already taken to the Beer Truck. I decided on a nap to rest up for the night of debauchery that would surely ensue.

Half an hour later, the sun was seeping through the meshing of the tent roof. I climbed out and saw Kelly reading a book and picking at a plate filled with the first of many servings of the Swine buffet.

It made me hungry, but it was also Golden Hour — that precious time of day right before sunrise/sunset that any photographer would cut off their hand for — whatever hand they’re not shooting with, that is. After quickly stuffing my face with the sizzling barbecue, I grabbed my camera with one hand, a fresh glass of beer with the other, and took to the fields.

Sure, backcountry can be soul-inspiring, but car camping is so much easier!

Editor’s Note: If you’ve been following this blog, you’ll notice a new design. (Yay?) Although I loved how big the pictures were in the last one, I really wanted some sort of navigation. The challenge was to find a WordPress theme that had a large-enough main well, as well as good navigation. You’ll also notice that the photographs/main space stretches as you adjust your browser window size. I’m not sure I love this yet, so I’m sure my schizophrenic template changing tendencies will undoubtedly continue. If you have thoughts or suggestions, however, please feel free to share. And, as always, thanks for visiting!

it’s the quality of light my mom affectionately terms “slanty light.” i’m so impressed with these shots, though. how do you compensate for the intense backlighting?

  5. So, I usually point the camera down to the foreground (where the corn is) and set the Aperture/Shutter Speed, then lock the settings in place by pressing “*” button, then point back up to the sun and shoot. Seems to work sometimes!

  6. Evan says:

are you shooting with the 5D Mii with these?

  7. I got the old 5D when MII came out. I shot these with that and a 50mm 1.4. Keep me posted on your 5D MKII exploits!
